Prepare with CELPIP
IRCC accepts CELPIP-General for Express Entry, and CELPIP levels match CLB levels one to one (CELPIP 9 = CLB 9). For citizenship, IRCC also accepts CELPIP-General LS, which tests listening and speaking only.
- CELPIP 4 = CLB 4
- CELPIP 5 = CLB 5
- CELPIP 6 = CLB 6
- CELPIP 7 = CLB 7
- CELPIP 8 = CLB 8
- CELPIP 9 = CLB 9
- CELPIP 10 = CLB 10

Express Entry CRS questions
What is Express Entry?
Express Entry (EE) is the online system that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses to manage economic immigration applications. It covers the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST) and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Eligible candidates can create an Express Entry profile, get a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score and, under the draw rules, receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence.
What are the requirements for Express Entry?
You must meet the requirements of at least one program: FSW, FST or CEC, including its work experience and language requirements. Express Entry accepts designated language tests such as CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training. FSW applicants must also score at least 67 points on the FSW eligibility grid and, where it applies, show proof of funds. The exact requirements differ by program.
How is the CRS score calculated?
Express Entry uses the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). It scores you on age, education, language ability, work experience, spouse factors and other additional factors. A provincial nomination adds 600 points. The CRS rules can change, so check IRCC's latest published standards for the exact points.
What changes to Express Entry on November 3, 2026?
Under the new scoring rules planned for November 3, 2026, the CRS will add a Labour Market Integration factor that covers Canadian work experience, high-wage occupations and qualifying job offers. For the points, the LMIA requirements and the timeline, rely on IRCC's official announcements.
What is an Express Entry high-wage occupation?
An Express Entry high-wage occupation is a Canadian occupation that meets a set wage threshold. It is normally based on the National Occupational Classification (NOC) and its wage data, not only on your own salary. For the occupation list, the wage thresholds and the conditions that apply, rely on IRCC's latest published standards.
How many points does Canadian work in a high-wage occupation give?
Under the planned new CRS rules, qualifying Canadian work experience in a high-wage occupation may earn extra points. The points depend on the occupation, its wage level and your qualifying work experience. For how work hours, part-time work and experience in more than one occupation are counted, rely on IRCC's official rules.
Do job offers earn Express Entry points, and do I still need an LMIA?
Under the new rules planned for November 3, 2026, a qualifying job offer in a high-wage occupation may earn CRS points. Whether a job offer needs an LMIA, and whether job-offer points and Canadian work points can both count, depends on IRCC's requirements once the new rules take effect.
Does skill transferability change, and do I need to update my profile?
Skill transferability points are mainly based on education, language ability and work experience. For the CRS changes planned for November 3, 2026, watch for IRCC's official instructions on skill transferability scoring and Express Entry profile updates. If you have a job offer, check your profile details early to make sure they are accurate and complete.
How do I calculate my Express Entry score?
Use the Express Entry CRS calculator above. Enter your age, education, language test results, work experience and other details to estimate your CRS score. The calculator shows the points for each part, so you can see how competitive your profile is. IRCC's official assessment decides your actual score and eligibility.
How many CRS points is an IELTS 8, 7, 7, 7 worth?
IELTS General Training Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0 each equal CLB 9. Under the standard CRS first official language grid, an applicant without an accompanying spouse gets 124 core language points. CLB 9 may also raise your skill transferability points for education and foreign work experience, depending on your situation and the scoring rules that apply.
What IELTS score equals CLB 7, and how many points is it?
CLB 7 equals IELTS General Training 6.0 in listening, reading, writing and speaking, or CELPIP-General level 7 in all 4 skills. Under the standard CRS grid, an applicant without an accompanying spouse gets 68 first official language points. Moving up to CLB 9 adds 56 core language points and may add more skill transferability points.
Can I use CELPIP for Express Entry?
Yes. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accepts CELPIP-General results for Express Entry. Each CELPIP-General score maps directly to a CLB level, for example CELPIP 9 = CLB 9. The whole test is taken on a computer and covers listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Do international students in Canada get extra Express Entry points?
Yes. A qualifying Canadian credential adds CRS additional points: normally 15 points for a one- or two-year program, and 30 points for a program of three years or more or a qualifying master's or PhD. Your Canadian education also counts in the core education score, and qualifying Canadian work experience after graduation may also raise your CRS score.
Does French add Express Entry points?
Yes. French test results from TEF Canada or TCF Canada at NCLC 7 or higher in all 4 abilities add CRS additional points: 25 points if your English is CLB 4 or lower, or 50 points if your English is CLB 5 or higher.
