Understanding the CLB

What Is the CLB?

CLB stands for Canadian Language Benchmarks — Canada's official language proficiency standard. It is a comprehensive assessment framework recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to evaluate the language ability of newcomers and non-native speakers.

What Is the CLBPT?

The CLBPT (Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test) is a low-stakes, roughly 90-minute placement test that rates listening, speaking, reading, and writing on CLB levels 1–8. Language-training providers use it to place newcomers into LINC and ESL classes — it cannot be used for employment, academic, immigration, or citizenship purposes. For immigration applications, IRCC instead accepts these designated tests:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CLB?

CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) is Canada's official English proficiency standard, divided into 12 levels (CLB 1–12). It measures the four English skills — listening, speaking, reading, and writing — and is the proficiency standard IRCC uses across its immigration programs.

Why should I take a CLB-aligned test?

CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) is Canada's official language proficiency standard, and an important benchmark IRCC uses to assess the English ability of applicants for Canadian immigration or work permits.

Many Canadian immigration programs, and some work-related programs, require applicants to reach a specified CLB level. For example:

Using CELPIP-General for some immigration programs typically requires reaching CLB 7 or above.

For applicants who want to strengthen their Express Entry profile, CLB 9 is often an important target; for IELTS General Training, CLB 9 generally corresponds to Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0 — the well-known “8/7/7/7” that Express Entry applicants using IELTS typically need.

What is the Canadian CLBPT — is it the Canadian immigration English test?

The CLB Placement Test (CLBPT), formally the Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test, is an English proficiency assessment developed against Canada's official CLB standard. It mainly evaluates English listening, speaking, reading, and writing ability, and helps schools, language-training providers, and some government-funded programs place learners into the right course level.

What CLB courses are available?

We provide structured learning support for students who want to raise their CLB English level, covering the following:

As part of our CLB courses, we offer training for several English tests that also belong to the CLB-recognized testing system and can be used to assess your corresponding CLB English level:

IELTS Academic

IELTS General Training

CELPIP training courses

CAEL exam preparation

We also offer complete question banks for CLB exam preparation in Canada. For learners with weaker English foundations or adult learners starting from zero, our Adult English and Conversational English courses can help quickly improve English fluency and communication skills.

What should I know about the CLB test exam centre? (CELPIP exam tips)

Arrive at the exam centre at least 45 minutes early.

Mobile phones, watches, and electronic devices are not permitted in the exam room.

After your ID is checked, you will be photographed, and your photo will appear on the computer screen at your seat.

After the photo, you will receive a seat number and login code — use them to log into the exam computer.

Before the exam begins, be sure to confirm that your microphone and headphones are working properly.

Can I cancel or reschedule a CLB test (CELPIP, IELTS, PTE Core, TEF, TCF)?

These CLB tests (including CELPIP, IELTS, PTE Core, TEF, and TCF) can generally be cancelled or rescheduled, but each testing organization has its own cancellation and rescheduling policies.

CELPIP example: Candidates can request a cancellation or reschedule through their CELPIP account. The rules are as follows:

Cancellation: If you request cancellation 9 or more days before the test date, you receive a 50% refund of the registration fee; cancellations within 9 days of the test are generally non-refundable.

Rescheduling: If you reschedule 9 or more days before the test date, a $50 CAD + tax rescheduling fee applies; within 9 days of the test you generally cannot reschedule and must follow the cancellation policy.

What is a CLB level, and how do I calculate my CELPIP CLB score?

CLB level is Canada's official language proficiency rating scale, measuring the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. CLB levels typically range from 1 to 12, with CLB 4 to 10+ being the range most commonly used in immigration and test assessments.

Different English test scores can be converted to a corresponding CLB level; a CELPIP CLB score is usually derived by mapping the four individual skill scores (listening, reading, writing, speaking) to a CLB level, with the corresponding CELPIP score range typically 4 to 10.

To find the specific CLB level your CELPIP or IELTS scores correspond to, you can visit our CLB score conversion page, or refer to the official Government of Canada website for official equivalency information.

What is the registration process for IELTS and CELPIP CLB tests?

It's important to note that CLB is the rating system IRCC uses to measure language proficiency — it is not a single test. The recognized English CLB tests include:

IELTS (General Training / Academic)

CELPIP (General Test)

(and, in some cases, PTE Core, TEF, TCF, etc.)

Each of these tests has its own separate registration process; once you complete the test, your score is converted to the corresponding CLB level.
